About SunStud
SunStud covers Australian solar energy, home batteries, EVs, and the broader renewable transition. We write for homeowners making energy decisions, tradies in the solar game, and anyone trying to make sense of the policy chaos around renewables in this country.
The site is run by Ryan Baxter, a Brisbane-based energy journalist who's been writing about solar and renewables since 2018. Before that, he spent five years as an electrician, which means he's actually wired up inverters and crawled through roof cavities -- not just written about them from a desk.
Ryan's got a 13.2kW system on his own roof, a Tesla Powerwall 2, and drives a BYD Atto 3. He's obsessed with monitoring his energy flows and will happily bore you with screenshots of his solar analytics app. His electricity bill last quarter was $12. He's very proud of that.
What you'll get here: honest takes on solar panels, battery storage, EV ownership in Australia, government rebates (and their fine print), grid modernisation, and the role AI is starting to play in home energy management. No fluff. No manufacturer press releases dressed up as reviews.
If you're thinking about going solar, already have a system and want to get more out of it, or just want to follow Australia's messy but fascinating energy transition -- welcome aboard.
